Eternals was billed as an epic lore and story-driven chapter of the MCU, but it ultimately failed to connect with audiences. ![]() The film had the advantage of having the prestige filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who had just won several Oscars for her film Nomadland, on board as the director. Released only a few months later, Eternalswas the third film of Phase Four when it opened in November 2021. Unfortunately, it sank pretty quickly after that, and it was only able to reach $183 million domestically and a global total of $379 million. Still, Black Widow opened with a respectable $80 million, which was more than Ant-Man and the Wasp had back in 2018. To offset this a bit, the film was simultaneously made available to rent at a premium price on Disney+ when it hit theaters. Because of this, the film had to overcome the hurdles that came with the pandemic era, mainly the large number of theaters that remained closed and how comfortable audiences were with returning to a theater in the first place. Black Widow was one of the first major blockbuster films to be released during the pandemic, following the likes of Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, and Godzilla vs. However, the first film of the phase, Black Widow, was released in July 2021. The first few entries in Phase Four were all Disney+ series, as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki all debuted in the first half of 2021. This had a dramatic effect on the box office of Phase Four’s films, but things finally started to get back to normal in the latter half of the phase. ![]() The phase as a whole was somewhat delayed, as the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic globally essentially shut down the entire entertainment industry. 8 of those projects were original series on Disney+, while 7 were feature films. While phases one and two consisted of 6 films each, and Phase Three was 11, Phase Four was made up of 15 total projects. Even though the phase lasted just two years, it was the most extensive of any yet. Phase Four of the MCU began in early 2021 and was wrapped up by the end of 2022 don't let its brevity mislead you, though. Not only was Phase Four and beyond already in active development and production, but there were plans to expand the MCU beyond films and into streaming series on Disney+ as well. Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios had no intention of slowing down, though. Endgame felt like the finale to everything that the MCU had been building, and there was some doubt that the franchise would be able to keep its momentum going after that. After the incredible success of Avengers: Endgame and the conclusions of both the Infinity Saga and Phase Three, the future was suddenly uncertain for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
